Father Paints the Son 18" x 24" 1999 / READ MORE BELOW
Allan Jones commissioned me to paint his father. It was the second painting
he had me do. The first being a memorial painting of his mother and sister.
A painting that turned out to be a little too personal to display because
of the sad emotions viewing it produced. So I was pleased when he requested
I paint his dad.
His father had recently taken up painting enthusiastically. My son Kamalu O'Ka
Aina, who was at the first meeting, spoke up: "Why don't you have him paint
his son?" It was a good idea - what was going to be one portrait, became two.
Lloyd Jones is a landscape architect and is strong and robust and ruddy while
his son Allan is a successful dentist and works inside - a fun contrast of
complexions.
Reversing the shadow of the son to show how it would be seen from the father's
point of view was of special interest to me.
As is usual for me when I do portraits - I like to use familiar objects, plants
and backyard views to surround the subject.
